:Now presents need to know with
the award-winning hyphenated Dr.
3
:Nsenga Burton.
4
:Dr.
5
:Burton, what do we need to know?
6
:Dr. Nsenga Burton:
7
:Good afternoon.
8
:Welcome to Need to Know Dr.
9
:Nsenga Burton.
10
:It is she.
11
:Today I am talking to
you about censorship.
12
:Censorship is something
that is supposed to be.
13
:Outlawed illegal in the
United States, right?
14
:One of the First Amendment
rights is the right of speech.
15
:Um, and we are seeing that
eroded every single day.
16
:So for example, we have Bill Owens,
who is the executive producer
17
:of 60 Minutes, who resigned.
18
:He resigned because he said
he could no longer do his
19
:job without outside pressure.
20
:Um, coming from not only the
Trump administration, but
21
:also from corporate interests.
22
:Now, you know, media has always
been run either by private
23
:families or corporate interests.
24
:Um, eventually after the, the
private family sell, right?
25
:So even now, the Washington Post
is owned by Jeff Bezos, who's put
26
:forth these, um, mandates about what
can and cannot go in a newspaper.
27
:And why this is problematic
for people who don't understand
28
:it is newspapers, journalism.
29
:Online media specifically is supposed
to be what is called the fourth estate.
30
:The three, you have the three exec, the
three branches of government, right?
31
:Executive, um, uh,
legislative, and the judicial.
32
:The press is supposed to be the
fourth estate, IE, the checks and
33
:balances of those three branches,
and so that is why they report.
34
:On what is happening, even all the way
down to your local school board, right?
35
:They report on everything, even for
your animal shelters like the dog catch
36
:everything because there has to be not
only coverage, but they have to have
37
:the right to report things to operate
in what is called the public interest.
38
:So one of the reasons that you have
that available to you is because
39
:we have the First Amendment right.
40
:Right.
41
:Speech, press, assembly,
religion, protest.
42
:All right.
43
:So what is happening is the Trump
administration is making all of these
44
:demands on institutions that were
previously, uh, self-actualize, right?
45
:Self mandated, all right.
46
:And so the press is one of them.
47
:IE they hold those three branches of
government accountable, and 60 Minutes
48
:has been doing incredible work on.
49
:Pretty much everything, but
certainly this administration.
50
:And so Owen has resigned because he
thinks he can no longer do the work
51
:because the pressures are mounting
and it looks like, uh, CBS might
52
:go the way of other companies.
53
:Um, like, uh,
54
:NBC that's settled.
55
:I think it's NBC.
56
:I'm having a brain fart.
57
:It might be a, B, C, it's
um, NBC that's settled.
58
:Sorry.
59
:Tony's like, hurry up.
60
:Um, but, uh, other media
companies who have settled
61
:lawsuits, so they've been engaged.
62
:CBS has been engaged with the lawsuit
with Trump, um, since 2 20 24.
63
:And he's pissed about some
interview they did with, um,
64
:Kamala Harris, um, where they.
65
:Edited the interview, which they edit
everything that goes on television,
66
:uh, to make her look better.
67
:I don't know why it matters 'cause
he won the election, but whatever.
68
:He's still, um, mad about it.
69
:So it looks like CBS might settle.
70
:Plus there's a possible merger.
71
:Um, and they know, they have been
told that if they don't settle that
72
:they're not gonna be able to go through
with this merger, um, or acquisition.
73
:So at any rate, what you need to know is
that you have got to support your media.
74
:Outlets.
75
:You've got to support NPR, you've
got to support PPS, you've got to
76
:support, um, even the major outlets.
77
:They have to be able to tell you
the stories that are fact-based,
78
:fact checked, and evidence-based.
79
:They have to be able to do that.
80
:And we know media is not perfect.
81
:It's complicated.
82
:They have a lot of gatekeeping.
83
:A lot of it is racist, a lot of it
is sexist, all the things, right?
84
:I'm a media scholar.
85
:I have a PhD in the subject matter.
86
:Um, so I know it's complicated.
87
:I write a lot of stories about the problem
with media, the problems with media.
88
:Um, but what I have to say that is
that if you don't have the media,
89
:we are definitely going to be.
90
:In a fashion state, we
will not have a democracy.
91
:It will be gone by the end
of this, this presidency.
92
:I feel very comfortable saying that
some people will call me an alarmist,
93
:but based on how fast this is sliding
into that IE where you can't have
94
:a free press, IE, we're reporters
are already being banned from the
95
:White House covering the White House.
96
:Right where you can't say these things.
97
:Here's our handout of what you can
and can't say what you can and can't
98
:report on what you can and can't do.
99
:And if you do these things, we're
going to, uh, sue you, we're going
100
:to defund you, we're gonna take
all of these things away from you.
101
:And that is in no way, shape or
form for the public interest that
102
:is for the personal interest.
103
:So what I need you to know is.
104
:The president actually works for you.
105
:I don't know why people keep acting like
we work for Trump, like he works for us.
106
:Congress is supposed to work for you.
107
:Your news media is at all levels.
108
:I.
109
:Local, regional, fe, federal,
international, it's supposed
110
:to, uh, work for you.
111
:National International is
supposed to work for you.
112
:All right?
113
:So what you need to know is you need to
get involved and make sure that you can
114
:get verified information and that you can
continue to have stories elevated about
115
:the three branches of government so that
your rights are protected, and that is it.
116
:So tune in next Thursday to another
Black Executive Perspective podcast,
117
:which is an award-winning podcast
with Tony Franklin and Chris.
118
:Um, and tune in next week, um,
where you can hear me as well.
119
:I wish you a wonderful day.
120

your rights and fight.
